Recent innovations plus classic style adds up to furniture as
fine art
At the beginning of the last century, the design world waged its own civil war.
On one side were the traditionalists, who revered the solid ground of old-world
style; on the other, the functional modernists anxious to create a new style
for the needs of the Machine Age. A hundred years later, these opposing camps
seem to have reached a happy compromise. By melding the innovations of
technology with the best traditions of the past, today's designers are
producing a modern, techno-oriented style that's very close to art. Hard-edged
metals like aluminum and steel are softened by a fluidity of line. Plush
fabrics are played against formal construction. Traditional forms take on a
playful sense of whimsy. And designs are both flexible and fun, just right for
the ever-changing lifestyles of today's homeowners. The result is style with
universal appeal - no matter whose camp you're in.
